Astronomy vs. Astrology
Very often, people tend to confuse astronomy and astrology. Astrology and astronomy both focus on the universe. The difference was not an issue in ancient times, unlike today, where the two terms are now interpreted differently.
Despite the two disciplines having similar characteristics, they are different. After researching thoroughly, scientists define astronomy as a discipline that aims to help people in a better understanding of the universe and other celestial objects.
On the other hand, astrology mainly focuses on the idea of heavenly bodies influencing the activities that take place on our planet. Astronomers use scientific methods and mathematical analysis to understand the universe better.
As technology advances, scientists can invent powerful telescopes and satellites that enable them to view celestial objects and planets better. Although there is a heated debate on whether astrology is part of astronomy, scientists argue on the concepts that astrology revolves are not verified.
Astrology uses theories that are not scientifically proven to support its finding, thus having little validity.
History of Astrology
Astrology records are dated back in between 4000-5,000 years. During those ancient times, people used the celestial bodies above them to mark time and other important events.
They had specific names to define constellation and other bodies in the universe. During the civilization era, people believed that those bodies in the skies somehow had control over their lives.
The Greeks, Chinese, Arabs, and the Mayans empires attached important events using stars and the special place they had in the sky. Astrologers in those times would carefully monitor the movement of the celestial bodies and would mark divine events that they presumed would occur on their planet.
According to the astrologers, the sky is divided into 12 parts, each measuring 30 degrees. Each division is given a name on the significant constellation found within it.
For example, the twelve signs of the zodiac are Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Cancer, Aquarius, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Leo, Pisces, and Aries. Astrologers use the positions of the moon and the sun to predict specific events.
People could read and predict their destiny and personality based on the star that was seen during the time of their birth. It was like today’s horoscopes where people link someone’s character with a particular star.
Astrology has been used for thousands of years and has earned respect despite it lacking proof. People accepted it as a strong tradition as a part of their human experience. Astrology lost status as part of science for the last 200years since there have emerged scientific researchers and equipment that have revealed the truth on what the celestial bodies are and how they are made.
Even though people still use heavenly bodies to mark important events, astronomers have given a clear insight into what the bodies are.
History of Astronomy
Like astrology, astronomy was their thousands of years ago. Unlike astrology, astronomy is the study of celestial bodies by applying chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
The discipline gives a clear insight into how the objects originated, their composition, and how they interact with each other. Generally, astronomy covers everything that is outside our atmosphere like other planets in our system, stars and their galaxies, comics, asteroids, and other bodies.
Unlike astrologers, astronomers do not divide the sky into equal parts, but instead, group celestial bodies with similar characteristics together. This scientific field is much respected because it teaches fascinating content on the universe and the origin of such bodies.
Astronomers give substantial evidence of each celestial body discovered, and their answers are scientifically proven.
The Astrology Celestial Clock
A celestial clock is a unique astrological clock that is used by astrologers to display unique astronomical information that is retrieved from studying planetary movements.
The clock displays the position of the moon and other celestial bodies and directly relates them to the event that is taking place in people’s livelihoods. For example, there exists a birth chart that represents a message or information that represents the individual.
Typically, a birth chart is divided into three sections; a planet, house, and a sign. Astrologers use the celestial clock to define a person’s personality and attributes.
People apply this knowledge to get an understanding of why they tend to get along with some people and disagree with others.
People have used celestial bodies for centuries to figure out dates and times. Astrologers used sundials to figure out the time of the day.
Role Played by Astrology in development of Astronomy
Even if astrology has no scientific basis, it has played an essential role in the event of modern astronomy. In ancient times, astrologers would carefully study and record the position of celestial bodies.
The records on movements of stars and other heavenly bodies played an essential role in giving astronomers an insight and understanding of how other bodies outside our universe. Astrologers use the evolution of the other bodies to predict the future and also interpreted what was happening in people’s lives.
However, the astrology and astronomy took different ways when astronomers became more rigorous in the eighteenth century. Scientists become keener when studying celestial bodies and would support their findings with realistic forces.
Astronomers put off claims that the position of sun, moon, and other celestial bodies had an impact on a person’s future and personality.
Substantial Differences between Astrology and Astronomy
So if you are not sure of the differences yet, here we discuss how astronomy differs from astrology. The first difference is that astronomy focuses on studying everything that is out of our planet, for example, other planets, stars, the sun, moon, comets, asteroids, galaxies, and other celestial bodies.
In contrast, astrology focuses on the positions, and motions of heavenly bodies and how the movement of these celestial bodies affect the events and lives of people. Astrology is like studying horoscopes.
Secondly, astronomers study celestial bodies and back up their claims using scientifically proven findings. Astronomers incorporate chemistry, mathematics, and physics to conduct their research.
Further, they have invented powerful telescopes and satellites that help them in research. At the same time, astrology bases their study on superstitions, and don’t have a systemic way to research and analyze their findings.
Thirdly, astronomy is classified as natural science and has earned respect like other disciplines, while astrology is considered a pseudo-science.
The reason why astrology is referred to as pseudo-science is that it does not give reliable answers that people may ask, while in astronomy, once astronomers make a discovery, they conduct further research until they come up with a reasonable explanation that confirms the theories.
Astronomers record every step, and they have enough proof and evidence to prove their facts.
