What does ST stands for?

In the name, Orion SpaceProbe 130ST telescope “ST” stands for short tube because the length of the tube is just 24inch lower than any standard 5-inch telescope. This telescope has a focal length of 650mm and an aperture of 130mm. By dividing both we get f-ratio of 5.0 that results in an excellent wider field of view with brighter and sharper images.

Size of a mirror (aperture)

SpaceProbe 130ST Equatorial is a reflector telescope that uses a mirror to form an image. The primary mirror is a diffraction-limited parabolic mirror (similar to the one used in high-cost reflector telescopes) with a diameter of 130mm (5”). On a short tube telescope use of a parabolic mirror is important to focus the incoming light to the secondary mirror.

Furthermore, the secondary mirror is held in a 0.5mm metal veins to reduce diffraction spikes and light loss.

Magnification with supplied eyepieces.

Orion SpaceProbe 130st telescope is supplied with two Plossl eyepiece of 25mm and 10mm that gives a magnification of 26x and 65x (focal length/eyepiece) respectively. Focusing on the target gets very easy with this eyepiece. Suppose you want to observe Jupiter, first use 25mm eyepiece to get a wide field of view of the sky to identify the target. Once identified, just change the eyepiece to 10mm and get the magnified view of Jupiter.so simple!!

Highest useful magnification of Orion SpaceProbe 130st is 260x. In future, if you decide to increase your telescope magnification go for 5mm Plossl eyepiece that will increase the magnification power to 130x.And with 2x Barlow lens it gets doubled to 260x, sufficient for this telescope.

Ease of use

The Orion SpaceProbe 130st comes with an equatorial mount with slow motion hand control. Once the telescope is aligned to polar axis (polar aligned) equatorial mount will let you track the planets in the sky simply by twisting the control knob wheel.

SpaceProbe 130st telescope weighs about 12 kg after it is fully assembled. Less weight and short tube length allow this telescope to be moved easily in transport. Just pack up put in the car and go to the best location.

Easy to assemble and transport.

High-quality optics with 5” aperture size provides astonishing picture quality.

Very nice telescope for astrophotography due to its easy to use, smooth and accurate equatorial mount.

Height adjustable tripod enables an observer to set the telescope according to their height.

Bundled 2x Barlow lens increases the magnification of the telescope two times. 2x Barlow lens combining with 25mm eyepiece will give 52x magnification and same way 10mm eyepiece will give 130x.thus, it doubles the magnification.

Included Collimation cap makes the process of collimation very easy.

Consistently getting a solid review from its customer on Amazon and other top reviewers.

Some of the other accessories present in the box are accessory tray, some screws, dust cap, collimation cap and starry night special Edition astronomy software.

Very competitively priced telescope for the amount of accessories and quality of optics you are getting.

Not much except, First time user /beginners will find it difficult to assemble the telescope in beginning. But once you understand the process it is not a work of more than 10minutes.

Being a reflector device telescope its need to be collimated once in a while.

Accessories you can buy in future

  • Orion space probe telescope has a highest useful magnification of 260x. So, a 5mm Plossl eyepiece will be a good option to buy in the future. 5mm will increase the magnification to 130x.

Orion 8242 5mm Stratus Wide-Field Eyepiece (price 140$ approx.)

  • Add an electric motor drive to the mount for motorized tracking of celestial objects. It helps to automatically track the objects as they move in the sky. Very good option if you intend to take photos of the celestial objects.

Orion 7827 EQ-2M Electronic Telescope Drive (price 80$ approx.)

High quality solid optics, 1-year warranty, quality accessories and great after sale support are some of the unique and appealing features we are getting from Orion. In fact, we were so impressed with this Orion SpaceProbe 130ST equatorial refractor telescope that we had to include this telescope in our “The best telescope for beginners” list for this year. Overall a very good choice for beginner users and worth serious consideration if you want a well-made and durable telescope at an affordable price.

I have recently moved to Murcia, Spain home to wonderfully clear night skies.
I want to get into astronomy – I’m a complete novice.
I think the ‘Orion SpaceProbe 130ST Equatorial Reflector Telescope’ is ideal for me BUT I cannot find a vendor/outlet in Europe.
Can you recommend a European seller? Does one exist?
If I ship from the USA the shipping costs are prohibitive………Love your site!!
