The Regal 100ED from Celestron’s M2 series. These series offer mid-range and some expensive spotting scope. M2 series is well known for their superior optical quality and solid construction. They are ideal for long distance viewing, target practicing, and birding because image quality remains intact even at the highest magnification. Regal 100ED brings all the feature of other M2 series scope and some other advanced features (which we will discuss here) at a price that is neither cheap nor expensive, basically a great mid-range scope.

As the name suggests Regal M2 100ED features a 100mm ED glass for an objective lens where ED stands for Extra low Dispersion Glass. A feature that is mainly found in some highly expensive scopes priced above 1000 dollars. Light is made up of different Wavelengths when it passes through lens different wavelength behave differently, resulting in a mismatch at the focal point and causes blurred or color distorted image this phenomenon is called a Chromatic aberration. Presence of ED glass in Regal M2 scope limits the scattering of light as it passes through the objective lens and focuses them to the center of eyepiece. This results in sharp, clear and better contrast image with minimum color distortion.

To further enhance the viewing capability Celestron is using its proprietary XLT coating (fully multi coated optics). There is basically four type of lens coating, a single layer Coating (C), a single layer on all air-to-glass surfaces also known as Fully Coating (FC), A Multilayer Coating (MC) and fully multi Coating (FMC). Celestron is using the most expensive Fully multi coated XLT coating in their Regal M2 100ED scope where multiple layers of hafnium oxide (HfO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and magnesium fluoride (MgF2) coating is done on all air to glass surface to maximize light transmission through optical path for better high resolution, high contrast images even in low light condition.

Eyepiece & Focusing

Celestron Regal M2 100ED scope includes a 22-67x adjustable magnification zoom eyepiece which gives the user a wide field of view for general purpose at 22x and magnified close up view above that magnification. With 20mm eye relief (excellent for eyeglass wearer) and adjustable eyecups users report that scope cuts down on eye strain and enable them to use the scope for a longer period of time. If you love astronomy and have some extra telescope eyepieces (1.25”) in stock you can also use them with this scope for some extra power.

Celestron has also introduced a quicker dual focus mechanism, where they provide dual focus wheel for precision focusing with coarse and fine adjustments.

Build quality

When it comes to build quality Celestron doesn’t disappoint on this also, Weighing about 4.6 pounds Regal M2 series boasts a magnesium alloy housing with fully rubber armored body that gives a solid feel and also provides a secure grip to the scope. The scope is also 100% waterproof and fog proof. Now you are not going to miss anything due to bad weather condition.

Here is some extra design feature that contributes to scope’s overall excellence.

Sunshade: Use the sliding sunshade to reduce the sun’s glare and also to shield the scope from stray light.

Lens cover: For lens safety, there is two lens cover for both objective lens and ocular lens.

Carrying case: For added safety, Celestron has included a view through case. No need to completely remove the case unzip it from both sides and you are ready to go.

T-adapter ring: Now easily attach your camera with scope for capturing amazing photographs.

I’m considering this spotting scope as a “grab-and-go” telescope for astronomy. The one thing I anticipate missing is a 1x (or small magnification) spotting scope (like a telrad or something). I’m wondering if there’s any out there that will mount well on this (other than using some adhesive of some type).
